How to make new friends in school?

I want to make new friends. We started school a week ago (it's a career center and we're there only half a day) and it seems like everybody has become friends with each other except me :(. They all have their little groups. I'm kind of shy and that's why I havent made friends there yet. I just want to make new friends. The problem is I don't know how to talk to people I don't even know. I mean I think it would be kind of awkward to go and say "Hi, my name is XYZ, whats your name?" because I know their names and they know my name already. There are no clubs at that school (the program I'm doing is a club in a way) What do I do?
