Please help... why were they so hateful?

Today (well, I guess yesterday now) my boyfriend and I went to the park to have a picnic. We were talking and after awhile we sort of started feeding each other gs and from there things kind of took off until at one point we sort of leaned in and we started kissing. It was an exciting, enthralling moment until - kerplunk - an empty soda can hit me right on the head. Stunned, I looked at the guy who had thrown it and he shouted "FAAAAAGS." I was like Oh my God what is going on? Then this woman started shouting at us, "What the hell is wrong with you people!? There are children in this park!" One man threatened to call the cops on us! They totally ruined our romantic outing with their hateful bigotry. Why would they do this? I have been up all night upset about this. I can't sleep at all. This was supposed to be an amazing day with the man I love but they turned it into their own gay-bashing festival. I don't understand, how could people be so hateful?
